5S keeps shared spaces easy to work in

5S is a way of keeping a work area organized so that people can find what they need and see when something is out of place. Each plant defines its own standard. Your approved local 5S standard is in the controlled document library, in the same place as your work instructions.

  • Sort: keep only what the area needs.
  • Set in order: give every item a labelled home.
  • Shine: clean as you go, and notice what the cleaning reveals.
  • Standardize: make the labels and layouts the same across similar areas.
  • Sustain: check regularly, so the habit stays.

A worked improvement observation

A fictional example from the Northstar Services packaging area.

Example

Spare label cartridges have no home

A short, factual observation with a proposed fix is easy for an area lead to accept and act on.

  • Observed: spare label cartridges for Line 2 are kept in different drawers, depending on who restocked them last.
  • Effect: finding one takes a few minutes, and the line waits while someone searches.
  • Suggestion: give one shelf at the Line 2 supervisor desk a label reading 'Spare cartridges, Line 2'.
  • Next step: the area lead reviews it at the next team huddle.

What a finished fix looks like

A good outcome can be checked by anyone walking through the area.

  • The shelf carries the label.
  • A tape line marks where the minimum of two spares sit.
  • The restocking owner is named in the handoff note.

Questions about observations

What should an observation include?

Say where you saw it, what you saw, what effect it has on the work, and what you suggest. One item per observation keeps it easy to assign.

What if it is a safety concern?

Do not log it as an improvement observation. Report it immediately through your site's safety route, as shown on the People and Support page.

Can I suggest a change outside my own area?

Yes. Name the area in your observation. The area lead for that area can then accept it or pass it on.
