Check conditions before work

A quick seasonal safety reference for Northstar employees

Northstar is a fictional company; the examples on this page illustrate how seasonal guidance can be presented.

Conditions and procedures can vary by location, work area, and task. Before starting or continuing work in unusual heat, cold, snow, ice, or severe weather, check the current instructions in the Safety Hub app. Follow local alerts and your supervisor’s direction. This page is a quick reference, not a substitute for approved procedures or emergency instructions.

Recognize the conditions

Use these examples to prompt a check of the current Safety Hub guidance.

Heat and sun

Heat, direct sun, heavy work, and limited airflow can increase the risk of heat illness.

  • Check the applicable Safety Hub guidance before outdoor or hot-area work.
  • Use the approved cool-down and hydration arrangements for your location and task.
  • If you feel unwell or notice a coworker becoming unwell, stop and follow the site response procedure.

Cold, snow, and ice

Cold exposure, slippery routes, and reduced visibility can affect travel and work.

  • Check walking and vehicle routes for ice, snow, and changing conditions.
  • Use required protective clothing and equipment identified in your local procedure.
  • Report unsafe access or conditions through the established safety process.

Storms and severe weather

Lightning, high winds, heavy rain, flooding, and other local hazards may require work or travel to pause.

  • Check current alerts and the location-specific shelter or shutdown instructions.
  • Move to the designated safer area when directed by the applicable procedure.
  • Do not resume work until the responsible site authority or supervisor gives the applicable all-clear.

When conditions become unsafe

Follow the approved procedure for your location and work.

  1. 1

    Notice and assess

Identify the condition and who or what may be affected. Do not guess at weather limits or exposure thresholds; check the current Safety Hub guidance.

  2. 2

    Pause or move when needed

Stop the task or move to a safer place if conditions or symptoms make continuing unsafe. Follow posted instructions and supervisor direction.

  3. 3

    Use the local response procedure

Open the Safety Hub app and follow the current procedure for your location, role, and hazard. In an emergency, use the emergency instructions applicable where you are.

  4. 4

    Raise the concern

Use the safety reporting process identified in Safety Hub or your local instructions. Share what happened, where, and when; avoid speculation about cause.

Rest breaks and hydration

Follow the rules that apply to your work and location

Governed by approved procedures

Northstar's break schedules, hydration arrangements, and any heat or cold exposure controls are governed by approved procedures and applicable local requirements. This example does not set a break interval, water quantity, or exposure limit.

Check before work in heat or cold

Check the current guidance in the Safety Hub app before work in heat or cold, and ask your supervisor which procedure applies if your assignment or location is unclear.

Report barriers

Report unavailable drinking water, missed required breaks, or other barriers through the established safety process.

Find current instructions in Safety Hub

Use the Safety Hub app for location-specific procedures and the established route for raising a safety concern.

Open Safety Hub and search for the hazard or procedure that applies to your work.

If the applicable instruction is unclear or unavailable, pause and ask your supervisor for direction.

For immediate danger, follow the emergency instructions posted or communicated for your location.

This page is a quick reference. Safety Hub and applicable local instructions are the authoritative sources for current procedures.
