Steps

  • Notify affected workers

Inform anyone who works with or near the equipment that lockout is about to begin. State expected duration. Post signs at affected areas.

  • Shut down equipment using normal procedure

Use the operator panel or controls to bring equipment to a complete stop. Do not just kill power — controlled shutdown reduces secondary hazards.

  • Isolate every energy source

For each energy source identified in the equipment-specific procedure: open electrical disconnects, close hydraulic / pneumatic valves, drain fuel / chemical lines, block rising parts.

  • Apply personal lock + tag to each isolation device

Each authorized employee applies their own lock + tag with name, date, reason. If multiple employees, use a group lockbox.

  • Dissipate stored energy

Bleed pressure from hydraulic / pneumatic lines. Discharge capacitors. Block raised parts. Allow thermal cooldown. Verify pressure gauges read zero.

  • Verify zero energy state

Critical step — try to operate the equipment using normal start controls. If it cannot start, energy isolation is verified. Return controls to OFF.
