Steps

  • Identify Energy Sources

Identify all energy sources (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal) associated with the equipment.

  • Notify Affected Employees

Inform all affected employees that equipment will be locked out for maintenance and the expected duration.

  • Shut Down Equipment

Follow the normal shutdown procedure for the equipment. Ensure all moving parts have come to a complete stop.

  • Apply Lockout Devices

Apply lockout devices to each energy isolation point. Each authorized worker must apply their own lock and tag.

  • Verify Isolation

Attempt to restart the equipment to verify all energy sources are effectively isolated. Return controls to the off position.

  • Perform Maintenance

With energy isolation verified, proceed with the required maintenance or servicing work.

  • Remove Lockout Devices

Once work is complete, remove all lockout devices. Only the person who applied a lock may remove it. Notify affected employees before re-energizing.
