Cash Drawer Open & Count
Open, count, and assign a cash drawer at start of shift. Prevents cash shortages and documents chain-of-custody.
Every employee gets a seat — priced per employee in Frontline Operations, quoted with this template ready.
Rolled out to every employee at AutoZone (125,000), PetSmart (50,000+), A.S. Watson and Raley's (20,000) — and at larger retailers we are not permitted to name.
Built for: Retail · Foodservice · Hospitality · Convenience
What's inside this template
Steps
-
Verify safe count from prior close
Pull yesterday’s close-out sheet. Confirm safe deposit total matches what was logged.
-
Pull opening float
Standard openings: $150 / $200 / $300 depending on location. Take from safe with manager witness.
-
Count opening float privately
Count by denomination ($1s, $5s, $10s, $20s, etc.) at a private station, not on the sales floor. Recount once before signing.
-
Sign assignment log
Both cashier and manager sign the drawer-assignment log: drawer #, register #, opening total, time, both names. Cashier owns the drawer until reconciled at close.
-
Lock drawer between transactions
Best practice: drawer closes between every transaction. Never leave drawer open or unattended. Step away from register = lock register.
