Steps

  • Transfer product to backup freezer

Move all product to backup walk-in or reach-in freezer maintaining ≤0°F. Use insulated covers if transfer takes >5 minutes. Document transfer log.

  • Power off freezer

Turn off compressor at disconnect. Apply LOTO if maintenance is electrical. Prop door open to allow air circulation.

  • Place towels at door + drain

Towels at threshold to absorb meltwater. Verify floor drain is clear and flowing. Empty drain pan if applicable.

  • Allow ice to melt

Typical defrost cycle: 2-4 hours depending on ice load. Do not chip large ice with sharp tools — coil damage risk. Use room-temperature water on stubborn buildup.

  • Inspect and clean

Once ice cleared: clean coil with manufacturer-recommended cleaner. Inspect door gasket for cracks. Verify drain still flows. Check thermometer calibration.

  • Power back on and verify recovery

Restore power. Close door. Monitor temperature drop — should reach 0°F within 4-6 hours empty. Verify no abnormal sounds.

  • Return product when at temp

Once freezer reaches ≤0°F sustained, move product back. Apply FIFO. Update equipment log with defrost date.
