Performance Management (EPMS) onboarding (review cycle rollout)

The plan we use to run a first performance cycle end to end — the org data reviews depend on, a template that fits how the company already talks about performance, managers trained before launch rather than after, and a deliberately narrow module set so cycle one finishes.

Rolled out to every employee at AutoZone (125,000), PetSmart (50,000+), A.S. Watson and Raley's (20,000) — and at larger retailers we are not permitted to name.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a performance management rollout take?

Configuration takes two to three weeks. The launch date, though, is set by the customer's own HR calendar — a company whose annual cycle opens in January cannot go live in September, and should not be pushed to. The useful question is whether they are ready two weeks before their cycle opens, which leaves room for manager training.

Which modules should a first cycle use?

Reviews and goals. That is a complete cycle. 360 feedback, competency assessment, development plans and merit each add real change cost, and adding them before managers have completed one cycle is the most common reason completion rates collapse and performance management gets a bad name internally.

Should the first cycle be linked to compensation?

Usually not. Linking pay to a process nobody has run turns every configuration question into a compensation negotiation, and it means the first set of uncalibrated ratings carries financial consequences. Link it once a cycle has completed and the rating distribution has been calibrated and is trusted.

What actually determines whether a cycle succeeds?

Manager capability and the completeness of manager-employee reporting data — in that order, and both well ahead of configuration. Reviews route through the reporting line, so a stale org chart produces employees who never receive a review; and the tool takes ten minutes to teach while writing useful, evidence-based feedback is the real skill.
